The Department of English and Languages at Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies was set up in July 2005 with a firm hope to gain distinction in academic quarters by achieving synchronization between the interests and creativity of students and the demands of the contemporary world and translate hope of students into a tangible achievement.

The Department, since its origin, has been on a resolute mission to provide the students with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge with an independent opening for learning beyond the curriculum. One of the reckoning feats of the Department of English at Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies is bringing out a Literary Magazine named “Acharya Pragnya”. The magazine has been the result of the initiative taken by the department and the cooperation and contribution of the students. The first issue was released by Dr. MS Thimmappa, Former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University, on 07 May 2009 on the Graduation Day. The introduction of Masters in English Literatures in 2011 was one of the successfully accomplished missions of the Department of English. Since then the Department has been trying to provide avenues to the students to build their potential to be writes of various existing genres. The English Literary Club – LIT-GEN – was initiated in 2012. In 2013, the Department took a step further and launched a literary blog Acharya Vanjmaya – a venture of footing to the e-world of literature. In 2014 the Department brought out its first literary magazine – WINGS. The Department has not just limited itself to enhancement of communication skills via teaching of the prescribed syllabus but also played a pivotal role in developing the creative skill of the learners and boosting the potential of the budding writers.
Eligibility : Candidates with 40% in aggregate in all the optional subjects and 50% of marks in the cognate subject at the Bachelor’s Degree level. Candidates with B.A., B.Sc., or B.Com Degree are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the Language concerned in the degree course.
Career Scope :
Students of English Literature can get jobs with the media as reporters. It is also possible for them to get jobs with newspaper firms. Besides, they have good chances in news broadcasting firms like NDTV, CNN – IBN, Zee News, Star News Communication etc. Companies that print out Magazines as well as journals too take in students of English literature frequently. Content development and ITES firms are another areas where English post graduates can build a strong carrer. Students of English literature can also find jobs as independent literary critics, writing for print or online publications. They also have the option to start their own tuition centres for the English language.
