Academic Focus
Biotechnology can be broadly defined as “using organisms or their products for commercial purposes.” It is the application of exiting scientific methods and techniques aimed at improving the biological systems, which include micro-organisms, plants and animals.
It embraces some of the most interesting aspects and techniques of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, bioprocess calculations, microbiology and bioinformatics. The biotechnology program makes the students not only well versed in basic knowledge but also specializes them in applied aspects of biotechnology. At Acharya we have the state of art infrastructure which gives the students an edge over others for developing their skills and knowledge.
Career scope In 2006-07, the biotech industry in India witnessed a lot of globalization, alliances, investments, and product launches. Exports accounted for almost 58 percent of the total revenues generated by the biotech industry, which means that India-based companies have concentrated on going global.
The industry has doubled in size within two years. The biotech industry in India, mainly consists of five distinct segments – biopharms, bioagriculture, bioinformatics, bioindustrial and bioservices. The industry in 2006-07 clocked $2.08 billion in revenues, registering 30.98 percent growth, over the previous year’s figure of $1.45 billion, which means the industry, is maturing. Based on the current trends, the forecast for 2010 is that the Indian biotech industry would boast of over 400 companies, of which nearly 10 biotech companies will go public and another 50 companies will be on a high growth curve.
The size of the biotech industry would be about $5 billion revenue, with about 100 biotech (domestic and imported) products in the market and there will be about 50,000 technologists working in the biotech labs. This give an advantage in the placement of biotech graduates and the scope of future biotech students is expected to be very bright.
Department activities
• In house projects
• Forum – Bioinifinity This Forum of AIT helps students in their personality development, conducts guest lectures, symposiums and even publishes the Department Magazine - Illuminati. It also conducts competitions, technical paper presentations, bio modeling, collage art, debates etc.
• The department has MOUs with industry and other institutions for research and development programmes.
• The department has been recognised as a Research Centre by VTU for M.Sc Engineering and Ph.D (Biotechnology) Courses.
