A month of festivities- Acharya Habba | |
Acharya Habba, the techno-cultural festival of Acharya Institutes, was recently held on the college campus.
The fest was, without doubt, a grand affair - around thirty thousand students from forty different colleges across the City took part in it. The fest went on for around a month, and was launched in a thoroughly unconventional manner - with a flash mob.
The habba had a grand total of 33 different events, some of which were off-stage, and others which were performed in front of a large audience on the final three days of the extravaganza. The host of events were varied - they included a 'cyclothon', a marathon, an ethnic day, a 'rangoli' competition, a math lecture competition, mathematics quiz, a treasure hunt, 'Mad Ads', 'Fun Speak', a street play event, a rock show and an on-the-spot programming event, to name a few. Various computer gaming events, like CS and NFS were also held, along with a group dance competition, a duet-dance event, and a pageant called 'Mr and Mrs Habba'.
Students who were of a creative bent got to showcase their talents on a variety of fronts - creative advertisement, vegetable carving, fireless cooking, face-painting, and singing competitions, of the group and solo variety, were also held. A photography exhibition was organised, and a show based on the popular 'America's Got Talent', called 'Acharya's Got Talent' was also held.
The unique aspect of the habba was that it was planned and executed entirely by the student population of the college, and hence retained a youthful energy and fun-filled atmosphere. The fest was given a truly international touch, because students from countries like Tanzania, Iraq, Bhutan, China, Congo, Afghanistan and even South Korea participated in it.
On the first day of the on-stage events, Radhakrishna Pallakki, a director from the Kannada film industry, was present. The students were delighted to see him.On the second day, another director, Mahesh Sukadhare, was present. He was accompanied by Mano Murthy, the music director. On the last day, Sandalwood actor Prem and child prodigy Shreya Dinakar visited the campus. Prem sung one of his own hit numbers, 'Nenapirali Kurakkuk Rallikere'. The fest came to a close with a bright display of fireworks. |

A shout for the hooligans
A team of students from Acharya Institute of Technology recently took a trip which served a dual purpose - they travelled to Pithampur, in Madhya Pradesh, to participate in a national-level engineering and design competition, and in the process, they managed to have the time of their lives. 'Baja SAE India' is a competition which is open to both undergraduate as well as postgraduate engineering students, and is held at the NATRAX facility of NATRIP, in Pithampur. Students taking part in this competition had to leave behind the security of their classrooms and try their hand at real-world engineering projects.
A 17-member team from AIT, who cheerfully christened themselves the 'AIT Hooligans', plunged headlong into the challenge with the aim of designing a vehicle by themselves. Among the 80 colleges who took part in the competition, they managed to grab the eleventh place for themselves. The Hooligans were captained by Amitav Kumar Gupta, and the other members of the team were Pinaki Dutta, Nayan Prakash, Rahul Gandhi, Nishkarsh Singh Chauhan, Sourabh Kumar, Ankit Kumar, Bhavin Tangal, Anwar Alam, Sandeep Hari, Siddhant Kumar, Mayank,Vivek Kumar, Arpit Shah, Prashant Madhup and Abhishek Kumar. Their faculty advisor was Jatadhara G S.
The vehicle that the students were attempting to design is called an ATV, or an all-terrain vehicle. These vehicles have low-pressure tires and handlebars to steer - as the name suggests, they are designed to be able to tackle almost any kind of terrain. To prove that their vehicle could really accomplish this, the students had to test it for a whopping 48 laps, over inclines, mud patches, wooden logs and rocky conditions.
The students confessed to having the time of their lives, and recounted tales of hours spent designing the vehicle and trying to figure out whether it could actually get past all the obstacles during the competition. Eventually, they emerged in the eleventh place and admitted to being proud of the same.
Amitav Kumar, who was captain of the 'Hooligans', said, "It was a great experience to be able to explore our knowledge and design this vehicle." |

ACHARYA CYCLO-THON- PEDAL TOWARDS A SMOKE FREE WORLD. | |
Acharya Institutes conducted its annual fest 'Acharya Habba', with a cyclo-thon which started from Kanteerava Stadium recently. The cyclo-thon carried out by the students of Acharya Institutes highlighted the benefits of cycling in daily life and also encouraged more number of youngsters to commute in bicycles to colleges everyday.
They also emphasised the fact that cycling will lower pollution levels and have a progressive impact on the environment, which is consistently dwindling in the city.
This thought inspired the students of the institution to take up the issue and organize the cyclo-thon through the Acharyan Adventure club 'Adventure.Inc'. The total 10 km cyclo-thon started from Kanteerava Stadium to Malleswaram 18th cross grounds through Hudson circle, Vidhan Soudha, Rajbhavan, BDA junction and Cauvery Theatre.
A group of over 100 cyclists participated in the event. This event was one of the programmes organised as a part of 'Acharya Habba', a month long festive fever in Acharya Institutes and will culminate into a three-day fest held on March 15, 16 and 17. |

ASM - German Exchange Program | |
Mr.Gowtam, final year student, who didn't let out the life time opportunity Of the German Exchange program. It was a two and half months program and Gowtam shares his views about the Role of Management in the German Exchange Program recently, support from the college, weather, People and also about his experience at Luebeck University, Germany.
1.It's said that the westerners discuss the weather all the time. How is the weather in Germany now? How are you coping with it?
The weather in Germany is very cold. Since our arrival, the temperature has remained at 4 degree Celsius (max). Snowfall is a daily occurrence in Luebeck. Winter months have shorter days and longer nights. Sun comes out after 8.00 AM and it turns dark by 4.30 p.m. Warm clothes only can save you from this miserable weather. Every room here in Luebeck is fitted with heaters. One can find heaters inside buses. I'm wearing nearly 4 layers of clothes and 2 pairs of woolen socks to keep myself warm. The winter months are very similar to the merciless winters in Russia. Temperature varies between - 5 to 10 degrees.
2.Tell us briefly about this German Exchange Program? How did it all start?
The German Exchange Program is the brain-child of our Dean Prof U K Ashoke Rao. Prof Rao introduced Prof.Oliver Rentzsc and Prof.Carron to the Acharya School of Management. Both Professors visited the Acharya School of Management and addressed the Students of batch 2010-12 in early May '11 and thereafter the MoU was signed between the two Institutes. During the Month of November '11, Dr Vijaya Kumar, Director-IA & HR visited the University of Applied Science, Luebeck and gave a presentation about the Acharya Institutes. On his return Dr.Kumar interacted with our class and briefed the students about the salient features of the exchange program, The University and Luebeck. That very moment triggered the curiosity in me. 3 students from our Batch opted for the program and now I realize what a blunder it would have been, if I had let this opportunity slip out of my hand. I feel truly blessed.
3.What role did ASM play in this whole Exchange program?
The Acharya School of Management(school) played a dominant role in the whole process. Right from signing the MOU, applying for visa to booking of tickets, everything was meticulously planned by the School and executed. The School also provided us with gifts and sweets that could be distributed to the German professors and students. The Dean also arranged for a warm send-off at the Airport. We thank the Management for making such excellent arrangements. We were accompanied by our classmates, who gave us a roaring send-off. We were touched by this move of the Management.
4.So,is this a Sponsored Exchange program? Who will bear the cost of this Exchange program?
I have not spent any money on anything other than my flight tickets. Food and accommodation in Germany will be completely taken care of by the University of Applied Science,Luebeck.
5.How long is the exchange program? When will you reach Bangalore?
It is 2 and half months (73 days). We'll reach Bangalore on February 16th 2012.
6.Share your experiences on Day 1 at Luebeck?
The first day at LuBeck was not eventful but interesting. Our Air France flight was till Hamburg. We reached Hamburg at 12 pm. Two students (Mr. Maik and Ms. Julia) came to receive us. We reached Luebeck by a cab. It was nearly 1 hour travel. We reached Luebeck at 1 p.m and were taken to a hostel. Two German student s gave us a brief on Luebeck, the local geography, bus timings and contact details. Then they invited us to a Christmas Market which is a very famous landmark in Luebeck. We took rest till 5pm. Then we got ready and took a bus and reached Christmas market which is nearly 30 min drive from the hostel. There we met 4 more friends and we were walking around and exploring till 8pm. Then they took us to a supermarket to purchase some groceries. We returned to the hostel at 9 pm.
7.What is your current Schedule in Germany?
Prof. Oliver Ritzsch met us on Day 2 and briefed about the schedule. The actual schedule started only from Monday (12the dec 2011). It started with a lecture by Prof. Oliver in the area of International Marketing Management. Our projects will be starting by 19th December 2011. The schedule includes regular classes and projects.
8.Share your experiences with the Faculty at Luebeck University?
So far our interactions have been limited only to Prof. Oliver only. We will be attending the classes of other faculties very soon. Prof. Oliver is very friendly. He frequents our hostel to make sure that we feel comfortable.
9.How about the students at Luebeck?
The students are very friendly and they have great regard for Indian students. They helped us in many ways. They are those who picked us from the airport. They also invited us for a dinner and we had a very good time. There is a lot to learn from them. They prefer to lead independent lives. Most of them are working while studying. They take care of themselves.
10.How different are students in Germany when compared to India?
There is lot of cultural differences between Indian and German students. For example, Indian students use statistics, empirical data and facts to make decisions, whereas German students use intuition, feeling and faith in decision making. They always exercise patience, show good character and never exhibit frustration or anger. German students are totally independent. They do all their work by themselves and take their own decisions. Most of them work while studying. They take care of themselves for their living and are not dependent on others.
11.Could you share the details about the project you will be working on very soon? In which Industry & Firm are you going to do your Project work?
We are supposed to do project in the following industries:
•Health care sector: Feasibility study for setting up a hospital in India.
•Food Industries (Corn Flakes): Understand the tastes and preferences of Indian people and look for a market there.
•Energy sector: Seeing the financial aspects (cost and benefit analysis) in establishing wind mills for energy purposes.
•Newspaper Company: making a survey regarding the daily use of News paper.
•Apart from these we'll be visiting the Volkswagen manufacturing unit to study the manufacturing |& assembly processes.
12.Is the time difference between continents affecting your routine? If yes, how?
Not much but to some extent I find it difficult to cope with. There is a 4 and half hours gap between Germany and India. By the time we get back from our class it will be late in the evening and that's approximately 11 P.M in India. So interacting with faculty and friends back home is very difficult.
13.Tell us about the city of Luebeck…its Geography and its features?
Luebeck is situated in Northern Germany. It is a very small city having a population of nearly 250000 people. It is the largest port in Baltic sea. Luebeck has three universities. Lubeck is also very famous for churches and we can find many churches in Luebeck. During World War II, the city of Luebeck was the first German city to be attacked in substantial numbers by the Royal Air Force. The attack on the night of 28 March 1942 created a firestorm that caused severe damage to the historic centre, the bombs destroying three of the main churches and large parts of the city.
Under wartime and postwar conditions it took until 1948 to remove most of the construction waste and demolition rubble. The remaining and the rebuilt parts of the old town are now part of the World Heritage Site
14.How is the work culture in Germany? How different is it from India?
We feel German people are fun loving and Not committed to work. When we read or watch news articles about Germany, only their fun loving nature is highlighted on many occasions. In reality they are highly professional and well organized. They are systematic and they stick to the routine. The people are bound by rules. Of-course they fancy good food and drink. They work only during the working hours. If it is a holiday then it is a holiday for sure. You cannot expect one to get official on a holiday.
In Germany, punctuality is a serious issue. Business people work hard and are under a lot of pressure. Germans typically plan their time very carefully. It is considered bad etiquette to be late or early as it shows disrespect for people's time. In India, punctuality is expected, although being 10 minutes late will not have disastrous consequences.
15.How is the cost of living in Germany?
It's high from the Indian perspective. But one can have a good meal for 3 euros. People in Germany feel it's cheap.
16.What do you feed yourself with? German or Indian? Hamburg or Dosa? Your routine menu….
We cook for ourselves in the Hostel. Prof. Oliver purchased Grocery items and we picked them as per our choice. We eat strictly Indian food for dinner. We have German food during the day at the college canteen. Mostly pasta and burgers at the college canteen.
17.Ever tried German food? What is your favorite?
Yes! Tasted them twice. Not sure of their names. The French fries were really good.
18.How is Night life in Luebeck?
As I told earlier Nights are long (nearly 16 hours). So far we haven't gone out and the main reason is the weather. We are planning to visit the nearby cities and explore the nightlife, since Luebeck is a small city and the city goes to sleep very soon.
19.Share the experiences about the Student Birthday party you attended?
It was a very good experience that too on the first day. It was a birthday of one of the student (named Julia). She was the one who came and picked us at the Airport. She invited us for B'day party at Christmas Market. We went there at 6:30 pm. There we met four more German friends and they took us all around the Christmas Market. Then they provided us some German food and drinks and it was totally a different experience. It was actually not like a typical B'day party like cutting cakes, blowing candles.., rather we were walking down the Christmas market and the adjoining street, doing some window shopping. We ate lot of local food.
20.Who is Prof. Oliver? What is his role in this Exchange program?
Prof. Oliver is a professor for Marketing at Luebeck. He is also a medical doctor (obstetrician). He played a key role in the exchange program representing the German government and the University. He visited Acharya and also had an interaction with the students. Presently he is our local guardian in Germany, attending to all our needs.
21.Are you facing any difficulties in Luebeck?
Barring the weather, we don't face any difficulty. We have got used to the food. People are very loving and caring.
22.We also heard that you are a "Champion Finance Manager". What made you choose finance as a specialization?
I don't know whether I'm a "Champion Finance Manager" or not. But feels good to hear that. Being a science graduate, I'm good at math and love solving problems. But Accounts was a nemesis in my first term. I decided not to opt for a Finance specialization. But I discovered by strength slowly and started exploring career prospects in the area of Finance. That really thrilled me a lot. I continue to love the subject. In my humble opinion, if you start loving what you do, you are bound to succeed.
23.Tell us about the certificate programs you have registered for? Have you cleared any professional certificate exams? Kindly mention?
In finance I've completed one certification course and currently pursuing one more.
I've done a "Wealth Management" course. If we clear this exam (60 % score for eligibility) there will be a guaranteed interview call from 3 leading banks. And other companies may also shortlist those who clear the exam. I've also cleared this exam and so far I've received a call from IndusInd bank and HDFC bank.
24.Coming back to the Exchange program, your favorite place in Luebeck?
So far I've visited only Christmas market, bus stand, railway station, University of Applied Science and my hostel which is at a place called Schanzenbergweg. Out of these my favourite place is the university campus. Both hospital and university is located at the same place. It is a huge campus and totally Hifi. Class rooms, canteen, offices, everything looks stunning.
25.Three words to explain this Exchange program?
Miracle, Career defining & Dream come true.
26.Three words to explain Luebeck?
Small, clean and beautiful place.
27.Have you started learning German language?
Very few words I know. So far I've learned 4 to 5 words only. "Gooten tag" (Hello) to all my friends back at ASM and I wish " das allerbeste" (all the best) for their exams. |

If only Girish Kasaravalli was a Bengali auteur
Courtesy :- churumuri.com
He doesn't crow about his feats, appear on magazine covers, or give loud interviews. Why, even in the 21st century, he has the utter indecency to make films with a total budget of Rs 35 lakh (Aamir Khan's Lagaan had a marketing budget of Rs 1 crore; Rajnikanth's Robot cost over Rs 100 crore).
Yet, staggeringly, the Kannada film maker Girish Kasavaralli has quietly accumulated six national awards for his portrayal of the social landscape, winning a Swarna Kamal in each of the last four decades-for Tabarana Kathe (1986), Thaayi Saheba (1997), Dweepa (2001),Kurmavatara (2012).
The 61-year-old auteur in an Q&A in The Hindu:
Q:- What according to you is a political film?
A:- Political films are not necessarily those that are made about politics, but anything that subverts our perception. No one can make a politically free statement, which is naive or contradictory in nature. The movie "Bairi" is a classic example where institutionalisation of religion is portrayed. What forms our perception by viewing it makes it a political or a non-political film. |

II PU valuation begins today
Relief For Now: Lecturers Will Take A Call On Boycott On Thursday
Clouds that had gathered over the valuation of II PU examination, slated to begin on Monday, appear to have cleared, for now. The lecturers have put on hold their plans to go on an indefinite strike till Thursday.
The Karnataka PU College Lecturers Association, whose members staged a day-long dharna at Freedom Park here on Sunday, met primary and secondary education minister Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri in the afternoon. They put their plans to go on an indefinite strike on hold after the minister assured them that their demands would be met in the next couple of days.
"We have been assured by the minister that some of our demands, that are within his reach, will be taken care of within the next two days. He also said that he will arrange a meeting for us with the CM before Thursday to sort out our problems. We are calling off the strike for the time being, but will boycott the valuation process if no decision is taken in our favour," said Thimmaiah Purle, president, Karnataka PU College Lecturers' Association.
Over 100 lecturers gathered at the Freedom Park to draw the attention of the government their problems like salary disparity, eligibility criteria in appointment and probation period.
"Junior college lecturers, tahsildars, panchayat executive officers and assistant engineers of various departments are of the same cadre. Till 1996, there was no disparity in the salaries, but the gap cropped up and widened later. While the lecturers' basic salary was fixed at Rs 6,000, that of tahsildars and executive officers was Rs 7,400 and Rs 8,000, respectively. The disparity kept increasing and the 7th Pay Commission has allotted a basic salary of Rs 22,800 for PU lecturers and Rs 28,100 for tahsildars. We want this disparity to be levelled," explained association member Janardhan.
The agitating lecturers demanded the implementation of the Kumar Naik Committee report to set right wage disparities. "We want the implementation of the report, which grants Rs 12,600 as basic salary for lecturers. Although the amount is still less than the salary received by officers of same cadre, we will accept it," said another member of the association. |

Mario Miranda | |
To call Mario a cartoonist would be like seeing no more than the elegant living room he entertained you from, through a long warm Goan evening. "Take a break and be my guest," he said. "Come and sketch the whole of this house. Should take a week or so if I keep a close eye on you to make sure you don't run off to do the day's cartoon."Said by E.P. Unny, the chief political cartoonist of The Indian Express, has a page one anchor.
Bachi Karkaria recalls her colleague from the third floor of The Times of India building in Bombay:What can I say about Mario? That he was one of India's most distinctive cartoonists? That he was arguably an even better serious artist in the detail and spirit with which he captured the places he lived in and visited? That he, along with Frank Simoes, gave Goa to the world? That he was to the magazines of The Times of India what R.K. Laxman was to the daily paper? And, dare I say it, that Laxman was the Lata Mangeshkar who subtly ensured that the pedestal was not for sharing? |
