About Program

World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from 1st to 7th August to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding practices. The programme aims to create awareness regarding the importance of early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding up to two years and beyond with appropriate complementary feeding. It also encourages families, healthcare professionals, communities, and policymakers to build sustainable support systems that empower mothers to breastfeed successfully.

Objectives of the Program

  • To create awareness about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and infants.
  • To promote early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth.
  • To encourage exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life.
  • To educate mothers and families regarding continued breastfeeding along with complementary feeding up to two years and beyond.
  • To strengthen community and healthcare support systems for breastfeeding mothers.
  • To dispel myths and misconceptions related to breastfeeding practices.
  • To promote sustainable and evidence-based breastfeeding practices for healthier future generations.
